Thrice @ Showbox at the Market, November 3, 2011

I was fortunate enough to see Thrice at Showbox at the Market in Seattle last night, and they KILLED IT :D I was a tad nervous because I’ve seen videos of them playing live on YouTube before, and I felt like Dustin didn’t sing that well live, but he (and the entire band) definitely proved me wrong. This was also the first time I was able to get to the VERY FRONT row and be against the rails and as close as possible to the band, which was amazing! Shows are so much fun when you can see the entire band, all of the lighting, and all of the action as it’s played out. It completes the experience and I had the time of my life feeling like I was completely connected to the concert and was able to enjoy it to its entirety. It is definitely worth it to get to the venue early and wait in line so that you can get the best spots possible to stand and watch.

Thrice was preceded by O’Brother, Moving Mountains, and La Dispute. I actually went ahead of the game this time (unlike the previous show that I attended) and listened to the opening bands before the night of the concert so that I could get a taste of what’d I’d be seeing. O’Brother and Moving Mountains impressed me, but I felt like Moving Mountains was a lot mellower than the three bands… and they also proved me wrong last night, which was awesome. La Dispute, on the other hand, I couldn’t acquire a liking to as I sampled them. I was told that they take some time getting used to, but I guess they’re just not my cup of tea. I thought their instrumentals were impressive live, but I just can’t get past the vocals. The crowd was really into them, but for some reason, if vocals aren’t to my liking, I can’t just get into the songs as much as I’d like. Bummer! All three opening acts were great, however, and I’m happy that they were all in the line-up.

After last night, I feel like I prefer Thrice live over recorded. Especially with their older music. I’m not a huge fan of their album, Vheissu, but I really got into when they were playing Hold Fast Hope and The Earth Will Shake last night. It was also sweet that they played not only tracks off of their new album, Major/Minor (which I explained in a previous post was the best album of 2011, in my opinion), but even music from a wide range of their array of their albums, even going back to their first album. They dedicated Anthology to all of their fans that have been following them since the beginning, and also claimed it to be the last song of the night until the crowd was able to change their minds, and they came back out for two more songs.

I also got a t-shirt and a hard-copy of Major/Minor (finally). Yay :)

Here is the set list, from what I can remember…

  1. Yellow Belly
  2. The Weight
  3. Promises
  4. All The World is Mad
  5. Cold Cash and Colder Hearts
  6. Of Dust and Nations
  7. The Earth Will Shake
  8. Hold Fast Hope
  9. Silhouette
  10. Firebreather
  11. Call It In The Air
  12. Treading Paper
  13. In Exile
  14. Circles
  15. Words In The Water
  16. Phoenix Ignition
  17. Anthology
  18. Phoenix Ignition (encore)
  19. To Awake and Avenge the Dead (encore)

Kind of surprised they didn’t play Blur. But they played all my favorite songs from the new record (as well as The Weight and Silhouette, which are some of my favorites from older albums), so that made me happy!

I’m pretty sure I’m missing like 2-3 songs and my list is pretty out of order… so if anyone could correct me on this, that’d be great :) I also did not bring my camera to the show this time because whenever I do, I get too focused on taking pictures and getting videos that I don’t enjoy the show as much as I could’ve… and I’m so glad I didn’t. I didn’t want to miss a second of this show. I can’t wait for these awesome guys to come back to Seattle so I can rock out with them again!

too tired to write a full blog entry about the new album by The Devil Wears Prada

But I’m just going to say that Dead Throne is awesome because they got rid of the shitty, high-pitched vocals that took over their previous two albums. Way to go, guys.

Okay, Asking Alexandria, you win

I know that I previously stated that We Came As Romans took my vote in the whole AA vs. WCAM debate, but I officially revoke that.

Noooormally I listen to an album all the way through before writing about it, but I’m making an exception this time because my disappointment in it so far is pretty apparent, and I highly doubt that the last three tracks in this twelve track album can change that. I’m currently listening to We Came As Romans’ new album, Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be, and it makes me a little sad that the album I was very eager to listen to upon release (and patiently waiting for said release months before it would occur) is not meeting my expectations.

A lot of the melodies are just plain annoying and generic.
The instrumentals aren’t very impressive.
They’ve ditched a lot of the electronic elements that they incorporated into their previous album and EP.
And maybe most important of all — the lyrics REALLY need some work.

Reading a review before having a listen, I was informed that this album had darker themes that their previous album did. …I am totally not hearing this. I hear a lot of whiny, melodramatic, uninspiring lyrical work that would appeal to 13-16 year olds who feel like their lives are just *~*~*~so terrible~*~*~* when they’re really just going through that stage in their life where everything seems ten times worse than it really is. I’m not quoting anything here, but it’s along the lines of, “I wish my life were easier, why are things so difficult, I’m going to go cry myself to sleep now, you don’t know the real me and you never will.” You know, that kind of shit. Okay, fuck, I understand being a teenager is difficult. We’ve all been there. But you should fucking get over it. I highly doubt you’re working a full-time job while going to college and trying to make enough money to pay off your school loans, pay rent, pay for your car insurance, pay for gas, etc. Your hormones are a hurricane but think of all the shit YOU DON’T HAVE TO DEAL WITH.

…I got a little sidetracked, but you see my point. THAT is the feeling I’m getting from this album. It’s the epitome of complaining, overreacting teenagers. And that makes me feel extremely let down because when I got the first single from this album as a free download on Last.fm, I was excited beyond belief for this album because that single was just so good and so much better than their first album and EP. And now that I’m actually listening to it… I’m almost thinking about deleting it from my library.

Who knows, I could be wrong. This album could grow on me after a couple more listens, but so far, I’m left with the taste of utter disappointment.

Meanwhile, I LOVED Asking Alexandria’s Reckless and Relentless, which was released April of this year. The songs were catchy, and while yes, some of their lyrics could use some work too, the vocals had overall improved and I thought the album sounded great. I cannot say this about We Came As Romans’ Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be, where the vocals sound almost exactly the same as all their other recordings. Not a single change or improvement. Reckless and Relentless led to Asking Alexandria climbing up on my Last.fm charts, which really surprised me, because I never thought I would see them so high on my charts when I sort of disliked them to begin with.

Well, nothing like a good ol’ flip flop in band favoritism.

All in all, Mis//Understanding is still a great single/song, but the rest of the album is a let down. And by the time I am finishing writing this right now, I’m already starting through my second listen in on the album, so I was correct in the last three tracks not saving the album. Asking Alexandria, you have my heart in the AA vs. WCAM debate. I hope it’s not too late for us.

Following up: BMTH, Parkway Drive, and Architects 9/6/11

Soooo as most of my followers probably know, I was super excited for the upcoming September 6th Showbox SODO show that featured Bring Me The Horizon (headlining), Parkway Drive, Architects, While She Sleeps (who was later replaced with Of Legends), and Deez Nuts (who I’m not a fan of). And if you remember my numerous posts anticipating this show, you probably also remember how I was originally debating on whether or not I should go because I was fearful of my life and basically a big chicken. But thanks to you awesome people on Tumblr giving me your opinions, I became a fearless rabbit monster and decided I was going to go! 8D

…And I didn’t. FUCK

Actually, I’m not too bummed out about it anymore. I love Bring Me The Horizon, but I was mainly wanting to go because of Parkway Drive and Architects, who I love with every fiber of my being. I found out from a friend the day after the show that Parkway Drive actually couldn’t make it due to visa issues (because those Australians sure are threats to our national security). So while I’m still disappointed… I’m not quite as heartbroken as I was initially since my favorite Aussies weren’t going to make it. But I’ll see you all another time!

I think I was really distraught about not going because it was an extremely affordable show that featured three of my favorite bands, and all of them are from overseas (two from England and one from Australia). IT’S LIKE THEY’RE NEVER GOING TO COME BACK TO THE U.S. EVER AGAIN -sob- but then I realized that’s probably not the case. Although, every time I miss a show, I always fear that they’re going to disband and I’ll never get to see them live and ahhhhhh life-long regret

Let’s just hope that doesn’t happen. ;)

So why didn’t I go?

Because stupid pretentious people were being pretentious and lousy friends. Oh well. That’s life. There’s always the next concert!

Upcoming shows in Seattle that I’m interested in:

  1. Underoath
  2. Hawthorne Heights
  3. Thrice
  4. The Devil Wears Prada

I’m pretty positive that’s the correct chronological order of the concert dates, anyway. I’m a little iffy about Hawthorne Heights, but their latest album Skeletons was pretty good (much better than their preceding album, Fragile Future), and one of my goals in life is to see as many shows as I can possible, so I’ll still try to hit up that one as well. But out of those four, the one I’m most excited about is Thrice!! :D Which I’m sure is a shocker. As I’ve stated, their latest album, Major/Minor, was absolutely amazing and took my breath away. Definitely my favorite album of the year. (Sorry, August Burns Red, but you’re still my favorite band!!)  I MUST hear this album live, otherwise my life will have all been a lie. And we don’t want that. Underoath and The Devil Wears Prada would also be awesome to see live! So through all of these upcoming shows, I’m happy to say that I have survived not being able to see the triple whammy show that I was so anxious to see.

Oh, Thrice, you’ve done it again

Thrice has stopped me in my tracks tonight with their new album, Major/Minor.

I was just about to go downstairs to watch a movie, but since I’ve been waiting for today to come so that I could listen to Thrice’s new album, I decided to listen to a couple songs first.

…And now I’m unable to pry away from my laptop.

I think one of the best things about this band and their music is their ability to be experimental and always have their music change, but still keep their signature style and sound at the same time. It’s almost contradictory, but they master it so well and impress me with every new piece they release. I’m currently listening to the last track as I write this, and there has not been a song that I disliked or would skip when listening to this album. This is extremely rare for me.

If you’re one of those people who doesn’t believe that good music exists nowadays with all the crap that’s being released and for some reason popularized, give Major/Minor a try. If you’ve never listened to Thrice before, hop right to it. I know I normally write about and listen to metal, but I’m making an exception and breaking that pattern right now because these guys are honestly one of the most versatile and talented artists I’ve ever listened to.

…My god. I am so excited to see these guys in Seattle this coming November now. I was so bummed about the fact that I can’t go to the Bring Me The Horizon/Parkway Drive/Architects show tonight, but now I have this amazing new album to look forward to listening live.

Just look at those ratings!! Go check it out on iTunes now!

I finally got a hold of Asking Alexandria’s latest album, Reckless and Relentless. Yes, I know that I am a few months late, thank you. I think the vocals are a lot better than their previous album and EP, because the random changes in vocal pitch and the whiny vocals in general were really irritating to me and led to me not being a huge fan of them and preferring We Came As Romans.

It sounds a lot more mainstream, though. Kinda sucks since they’re a pretty new band compared to others… but eh, bound to happen. /hipster

But is it just me, or do they sound pretty damn similar to A Day To Remember in regards to their updated vocals? At least, that’s what I got out of it.

AWESOME

As I’d hoped, the Hawthorne Heights show in Seattle is indeed October 6th, not September 6th, the day of the Bring Me The Horizon/Parkway Drive/Architects show. Huge sigh of relief.

I’m sure my followers are getting tired of hearing about these shows coming up that I’m super excited about, BUT THIS IS MY BLOG AND I GET TO WRITE ABOUT WHATEVER I WANT :D

In other news, I really think that bigger people should sit on the aisle seats on the bus and thinner people should sit at the window seats. I’ve thought this for a while, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it this morning. Whenever I sit on the aisle seat, I’m always slipping and sliding off of it whenever the bus takes a turn and I am tired of it. :| They should make the window seats courtesy seats for lighter people like how the seats in the front are courtesy seats for disabled/elderly/injured people. I’ve already fallen off of my seat TWICE, and I’d rather not injure myself or knock someone who’s standing in the aisle over and injure them.

That is my honest opinion.
